Automatic Chlorine Dispenser

Looking for a hands-free way of keeping your pool algae free?

I thought of this idea after forgetting to put chlorine powder into my uncle's swimming pool while he was overseas. When he came back the pool was green and full of algae. And, I know the importance of keeping pool water hygienic as in the past both my sister and I suffered from bacterial infections because of improperly sanitised pool water.

Designing the whole system from scratch was a challenge, although running into the problems and fixing them was quite enjoyable. I learnt something new every time a problem was fixed - whether it was the countless times that transistors burnt because of excessive current, bad soldering joints causing me hours of frustration, or forgetting to put in shrink tubes before soldering LEDs. While I know all these experiences will help me in the future, the greatest satisfaction was seeing the project work at the very end!

In addition to playing sports, computer games and taking apart electronics I love doing DIY projects on the internet. As a learning medium I find the colossal library of information that is the internet really is a great teacher. We can learn a lot from 'how to' articles and videos on websites and forums and that's why I think it's the one invention that's really changed our lives.

I'm planning to study a BE (Mechatronics) conjoint BSc (Psychology) at University of Auckland and my dream job is to one day create a mind-controlled computer or electrical system that uses human thoughts to control things like cars, computers and home appliances
