Roll Measurer

Roll Measurer is a compact electronic measurement tool. Simply roll the device over any surface in a straight line and it will record the distance it has travelled and display it on an LCD screen. The device even works on curved surfaces, and an added feature allows the user to measure the angle of those curves.

The inspiration for this project came from my brother.  He was finding it difficult to get accurate measurements for curved, long and large surfaces using existing tools.

The best part about making this project was being able to test and play around with new components.  It was satisfying when I had a finished product that I could use and take measurements with.

I ran into a lot of difficulties along the way.  Finding the correct components to use for measurement was the biggest stumbling block.  Learning how to use the accelerometer and applying it to obtain angles created obstacles both mathematically and in programming, but I was able to overcome them in the end.

In my spare time I enjoy assembling small bits of electronics to develop useful devices. I plan to enrol in the University of Auckland to study Electrical and Electronic Engineering next year.
