Hello. Does anyone know any way to get a new Mac to boot into OS 9? It's a powerPC OS so it should be possible, it's just that apple tell me it stops it for security reasons(does that mean so that everyone has to buy OS X?)

You could always install mac os 9 on the classic environment (go to apples support page for more info). This lets you run os 9 inside os x (with a slight performance decrease). Oliver

Security reasons maybe. If you want to get unathorised access to a machine, the first thing you try is booting from a non-resident OS. If you boot into 9.x from a CD, you can wipe X's password file and gain root access (although you can do this without the boot CD, from OS X's bootloader, but that's beside the point). But yeah, you're onto it Leaf; Apple want everyone on OS X. Apple prevented booting into OS 9 on the new machines (late model G4, G5 and G6). The older machines (pre '05) will still handle OS 9 no trouble. Classic environment is your only option on the newer beasts. If anyone's interested I've always got a few Macs knocking around -- at the moment an old 233 iMac and a 400 G4 tower looking for new homes. They will run 9.x like a dream.

Hi! I've discovered that actually there is a thing in the NewWorld ROM (the OS 9 bootloader, or /System Folder/ Mac OS ROM') which checks if you've got a MacRISC compatible. I changed this, but now it fails the checksum... Interesting, anyway. I also wondered about booting from the MacOSROM file in Classic Enviroment, but it didn't work. Good Luck!

I've actually got it listed on TradeMe at the mo ... check listings under "renegadebob". If it doesn't sell, drop me an email - w.pearse@gmail.com - and I'll give you $25 off (saving from success fees!). Runs Mac OS X Tiger (latest version) no trouble ...
