For a while last year NZ didn't have a great range of cheap LCDs available to buy.  Several companies & individuals are now creating solutions to fill the whole in the market by making there own versions.

Once you get your head around what is needed it's straight forward to make your own.

If this is not for you though consider........

the Organic LED display from PICAXE with a typical 16x2 display.  Buying just one from the UK & getting it shipped out cost $27 which is pretty cheap when you consider what else is out there.

Since then PICAXE have launched the 20x4 display in the OLED line.  (Just ordered one to play with!)

LCD screens are great and the new OLEDs are pretty funky too.

OLEDs are going to take over from LCD screens as they are cheaper, use less power, have brighter colours and can be made thinner than LCDs. There is an article in the Herald today about Sony moving to OLED screens
